Once known as Faifo, Hoi An was an influential port along the Silk Road. For over 500 years, merchants from China, Japan, France and Portugal settled in the prosperous town resulting in a distinctive blend of culture, cuisine, religions and architecture. In 1999, the town was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site listed for having the most unique architecture in Southeast Asia. It has been restored and protected by both the UNESCO funding and proud locals.

Begin your tour by foot into the heart of Hoi An, a former trading port that welcomed Chinese, Dutch, French, Japanese, Portuguese and Arab merchants between the 16th to 18th Centuries. Nowadays, Hoi An is famous for its stunning restored architecture, homemade silk, expert tailors, distinctive yellow walls and delicious noodles and seafood. Its relaxed vibe and pedestrian streets make this town a pleasure to discover by foot.

Along with your stroll, stop off at the city's best cultural landmarks. Start with a wander through the Chua Ong Pagoda, a stunning Chinese-style structure built in 1653 to honour the Chinese general Quan Cong. Then, head onward to the Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, famous for the Jinshang Temple dedicated to the goddess of the sea. Since the city's culture was linked closely with the sea - and the safety of merchant sailors that frequented its shores - this temple is one of the most historic and significant in the entire town.

Finally, wander onward to the 200-year old ancestral Tan Ky House and the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge. Built by Japanese craftsman and doubling as a temple. Learn about how the bridge was constructed and how it become a major landmark in the city before the guide takes you back to your hotel for overnight stay.

Would you like to go fishing with the local fisherman? Why don't you have a fun experience with the funny basket boat. You shouldn't have any hesitance because the day will put a broader smile on your face. It is very interesting to fish here on the river with the local fisherman as you catch your fish and we cook for you.

On the Fishermen & the Waterways of a Past War Tour you will enjoy a wide range of experiences – from learning traditional fishing techniques to paddling the strange and unique Vietnamese bamboo basket boats while exploring the now tranquil coconut-palm flanked waterways of a past war. On this tour, we provide an authentic social and cultural insight into the local Vietnamese way of life. As well you will take part in some hands-on activities that are fun, safe and interesting to people all of ages.

Overnight in Hoi An.

Have a leisure day in Hoi An. You could have a walk through the streets in Old Town and admire the mixture of different architectural styles of local buildings, you could visit a tailor (Hoi An has over 400 tailor shops), who will make clothes, bags, and shoes for you within a day, or just relax at the beach or at your resort.

We recommend visiting an Old Town after the dark when it transforms into a mystical row of lights and lanterns. In fact, Hoi An is a big center for paper lantern manufacturers and merchants. Every shop or establishment will have a few lanterns outside, but the real sight is the lantern market. After a stroll through the market, check out the outdoor traditional theatre. You will have a chance to see Vietnamese folk dancers and musicians perform traditional pieces. The theatre runs from 9pm to 10pm at the square on Nguyen Thai Hoc street. It is completely free and open to the public. Before you come back to your hotel, be sure to light a candle box and set it in the water. Many kids sit along the banks of the channel and offer candles to you – remember to make a wish.

We are interested in this tour of Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand but not until Sept 2020. Do you offer an option without the flights included?

  • Beverly

I’m very interested in this tour. However, I will probably be traveling alone. Is this a group tour? Will I be with other people? How much to travel alone? Do you have any other inquiries about solo travel or someone wanted to share a room?

    • Cate

Hi Beverly. Saw your post. I might be traveling solo as well this tour (I think it’s a tour anyway) looks interesting. It did say 15 spots, so not sure if this is a small group tour. Contact me if you like.
